Q: What is this site for?
A: We are a media file, document and more search engine. Everybody knows what a web page search engine is, Bing, Google, Yahoo, etc. We search files rather than web pages from all over the Internet.
Q: Does it cost anything to use?
A: No, there is no cost to use the site. The only optional cost is usenet service (see below) and our alerts system to tell you by email or phone text when we find things you like.
Q: What are some examples of things I can find?
A: Uses are practically unlimited. We challenge you to search and find anything you can think of! (Please see question below on best ways to use the search)
Q: How are you different?
A: File sharing (or P2P) allows people to share with each other who are logged in to their computer at the same time.
Most free download sites only get their content from one or a few outlets, for example, only from certain upload services. We are the only file search engine that searches the Web, FTP, etc essentially everywhere..
We also have many searching options to narrow down your search by file type or date, and more in the advanced search options. It is also smart, and if you search for something and nothing comes up, it will go and look for more stuff with your search term. You can also get email alerts when new files are found based on keywords you put in.
Q: What is the best way to search?
A: The best way to search is with the title, author or subject of what you're looking for. For instance, it is not necessary to search in this manner “documents about pizza recipes” - instead simply search for “pizza recipes” and click the documents tab under the search bar.
Another example is “sound of a person burping”, (instead) in this case you would go to the audio section and search “burp”. It's always best to start with a simple search term and then specify more to narrow your search results.**
Q: Do you search my computer? Where do these files come from?
A: No, we do not access your computer to get files or catalog anything from your private personal computer. Files located in findthatfile search engine are "spidered" for on the public open websites and other public resources. findthatfile does not catalog or access private computers.
Q: What about viruses? Do you scan for them?
A: Any media displayed with [
] logo has been certified virus and mal ware free on the verified display date. More information about technology used can be viewed at : http://www.clamav.net/lang/en/. Please note that not all media is verified and we are continuing to verify more media with time.
Q: What are all the file types and how do I open the files..?
A: We recommend using "www.file-extensions.org" OR "www.fileinfo.com" to lookup any file types and what programs are used to access them
-
Q: Why do some files open up Quicktime™ instead of downloading?
A: If you're using Firefox browser, go to the Options menu. Then click Applications at the top of the Options menu. There will be two sections, "Content Type" and "Action". Wherever you see Quicktime player you can click and change to your prefferred program. We recommend selecting "Always ask" for convenience. Next click 'OK' to save these settings and retry your download.
Q: When searching I found results from emule download? What is it?
A: Emule is a file sharing software that we offer search results for, you do need external software for this which is free. Please see more about emule network/p2p by clicking here. The disadvantage to emule is downloads can be slower or difficult because both people have to be logged in to the software to share files.**
Q: When searching I found a usenet download? What is it?
A: Usenet is a giant forum/message board where people post things, such as video, audio, documents and more. We have cataloged all this for you to make it simple to search and download. The down side to usenet is that to access it you need to pay a small monthly membership fee. Once you have a subscription, you can download anything you like.
The advantage to usenet is the vast amount of content. Also, downloads are easily accessible and very fast to download. **
Q: I've heard of torrent downloads before, but what are they?
A: Bittorrent or torrent (file sharing) is an external software you need to download (like emule). We recommend you use uTorrent to get any downloads from Bittorrent. The disadvantage to Torrent files is that the other user who is sharing needs to be online when you download (like emule). The advantage is the vast amount of content available via Bittorrent**
